Epilogue
John
Steed was a character who up to this day has been without parallels or
successors, at least regarding his particular approach to life and solving
mysteries. Unlike many other characters of the small screen, Steed experienced
a noticeable evolution of his personality through the life of the series,
an evolution rarely matched by any other character of any other show.
The originality, innovation
and overall value of "The Avengers" owes a huge debt to the
character developments madeconsciously or unconsciouslyby Patrick
Macnee and the indelible impressions made by his co-stars. It was a show
that, thanks mostly to its characters, never "remained still,"
but moved forward, keeping pace with the ever-changing world of which
it was a part.
Forty years after the show first aired, the magical energy of the series
still prevails. Today, in a different world and in a different century,
"The Avengers" is still moving successfully onwards...
My deepest gratitude to Mona in the first place,
and also to many other Steedophiles in the United
States and other parts of the world, because a good part of the reflections
exposed here is based
on innumerable debates via email we've been maintaining for nearly a year.
